# How to sell a car with a bad transmission

> You can sell a car with a bad transmission as-is to junkyards, car-buying services, mechanics or private buyers who want a project. Get a shop's diagnosis first, because the fix may be smaller than a full replacement, then compare the repair quote with as-is offers. Describe exactly how it behaves (slips, won't shift, no reverse, won't move) so the offer doesn't change at pickup.

## The short answer

A failing transmission doesn't stop you from selling. Your options:

- **Repair it** (fix the specific fault, rebuild, or swap in a used or remanufactured unit), then sell or keep the car.
- **Sell it as-is** to a junkyard, a car-buying service, a mechanic, or a private buyer who wants a project.
- **Trade it in** to a dealer, usually for a low as-is value.

The right choice comes down to how much the car is worth working versus the repair bill. Get the diagnosis first, because "bad transmission" covers a wide range of problems, and you can't compare options until you know which one you have.

## Get a diagnosis before you decide

Transmission symptoms (slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, warning lights, no reverse, no movement) can come from different causes, and the repair cost varies widely. A written diagnosis from a transmission or general repair shop tells you:

- what's actually wrong and what the fix is,
- whether it's a repair, a rebuild or a replacement, and
- what it'll cost, in writing.

Insurance generally won't help with wear. Triple-I notes that collision coverage doesn't cover mechanical failure or normal wear and tear.[^1] If a crash or flood caused the damage, that's a different conversation with your insurer.

The diagnosis also helps when you sell. "Shop says the torque converter has failed" gets you a firmer offer than "something's wrong with it."

## Repair or sell: compare three numbers

1. **The repair quote**, including labor.
2. **What the car sells for in working order**, based on local listings for the same model, year and mileage.
3. **As-is offers** for the car as it is now, from two or three buyers.

If the working value minus the repair quote is clearly higher than the as-is offers, repairing can pay. If they're close, or the car has other problems waiting (high mileage, rust, a tired engine), sell it as-is. See [junk or repair](/guides/junk-or-repair-car/) for more on this decision.

## What affects the price

As-is buyers price the car on what they can use or resell:

- **The engine and the rest of the drivetrain.** A healthy engine is a big part of the value of a car with a bad transmission.
- **Body, interior, glass and tires.**
- **Year, make and model,** and how much demand there is for its parts.
- **Whether the car moves.** If it can still be driven onto a truck or rolls freely, pickup is simpler.
- **Completeness.** Missing parts, especially the catalytic converter, lower offers. See [catalytic converters and junk cars](/guides/catalytic-converter-and-junk-cars/).
- **Title status.** A clean title in your name reaches the most buyers.

A worn-out transmission usually doesn't brand the title. Texas, for example, treats only sudden damage (from a wreck, fire, flood or stripping) as qualifying damage for salvage status, and excludes gradual damage from any cause.[^2] That keeps more buyers open to you.

Buyers set their own prices, and we can't quote one. See [how junkyards price cars](/guides/how-junkyards-price-cars/).

## Driving it to the buyer vs towing

If the transmission still shifts reliably, you may be able to drive the car to a nearby buyer. Don't if it slips, drops out of gear or won't hold in park: losing drive in traffic is dangerous, and a car that dies on the way still needs a tow. Many buyers include towing in their offer, so ask. If the car won't move at all, tell the buyer, because the tow driver may need a flatbed or a winch. See [junk car towing](/guides/junk-car-towing/).

## What to tell buyers so the offer holds

A vehicle history report typically won't list mechanical problems,[^3] so describe it yourself:

- How it behaves: "slips in 2nd and 3rd," "no reverse," "won't go into gear," "moves only in low."
- Any shop diagnosis and the repair quote.
- Whether it starts and runs, and whether the engine is healthy.
- Whether it can be driven, rolled or only dragged.
- Title status and any loan.
- Clear photos of all sides, the interior and the odometer.

A buyer who finds what you described pays what they offered. A buyer who finds something worse renegotiates on the spot.

## Paperwork

The sale paperwork is the same as for any car:

- **The signed title.** In Texas, the seller gives the buyer a properly signed title with the date of sale and odometer reading.[^4] See [how to sign over a car title](/guides/how-to-sign-over-a-car-title/), or [selling a car without a title](/guides/sell-car-without-title/) if it's lost.
- **A bill of sale** that says "sold as-is" and names the transmission problem. See [bill of sale for a junk car](/guides/bill-of-sale-for-junk-car/).
- **A lien release** if a loan was ever recorded. See [selling a car with a lien](/guides/sell-car-with-lien/).
- **A release of liability** where your state has one. California requires notice to the DMV within 5 calendar days of the sale.[^5] Texas protects sellers who file a vehicle transfer notification within 30 days.[^4]

## Steps to sell a car with a bad transmission

1. **Get a written diagnosis and repair quote.**
2. **Check its working value** in local listings.
3. **Get two or three as-is offers** with the same honest description.
4. **Decide:** repair, sell as-is or trade in.
5. **Gather the title,** any lien release and your ID.
6. **Empty the car** and handle the plates as your state requires. See [preparing a car for the junkyard](/guides/prepare-car-for-junkyard/).
7. **Complete the sale,** sign the title and bill of sale, file your [release of liability](/guides/release-of-liability/) and [cancel insurance and registration](/guides/cancel-insurance-and-registration-after-selling/).

Title and release rules vary by state; check yours on our [junk car laws](/junk-car-laws/) page, such as [California](/junk-car-laws/california/) or [Texas](/junk-car-laws/texas/). When you're ready, [get an offer for your car](/cash-for-junk-cars/).

## Questions people ask

**Can I sell a car with a bad transmission to a dealer?**

Some dealers take them as trade-ins, usually at a low value because they plan to wholesale or scrap them. Get as-is offers from junkyards and car-buying services too so you have something to compare.

**Should I drive the car to the buyer?**

Only if it shifts reliably and you can do so safely. A transmission that slips or drops out of gear can strand you or cause a crash. If in doubt, ask whether the buyer includes towing.

**Does a bad transmission affect the title?**

Usually not. Wear-out failures aren't the kind of sudden damage that leads to a salvage brand in states like Texas, so the title normally stays clean.

**Do I have to tell the buyer?**

You should, in writing. History reports typically don't show mechanical problems, so buyers rely on your description, and misdescribing the car is a common reason offers get cut at pickup.
