How do I sign over a car title in Oklahoma?
A paper Oklahoma title must be properly assigned by the seller and notarized. If the title is electronic, the seller uses Form 718, Bill of Sale of an Electronic Title, which must be notarized. For 2011 and newer motor vehicles an odometer disclosure is required, usually on the title assignment; otherwise use Form 729. A private sale also needs a declaration of purchase price (Form 722-1). The buyer must transfer the title within 30 days of the assignment date or pay penalties.
Can I sell or junk a car without a title in Oklahoma?
Service Oklahoma requires an assigned, notarized title, or Form 718 for an electronic title. If the owner lost the title, they apply for a replacement (Form 701-7) before selling. If the buyer lost a title that was already assigned to them, they use Form 777 (Affidavit for Transfer of Ownership Following Loss of Assigned Oklahoma Title) with a notarized bill of sale or other proof such as a cancelled check, sale contract, or certified copies of the lost title.
How do I get a duplicate title in Oklahoma?
Form 701-7, Application for Replacement Certificate of Title, signed by the record owner or lienholder and notarized. The fee is $11, plus a $1.73 mail fee if mailed. Include the VIN and current registration decal number; current Oklahoma registration is required. Submit to any Licensed Operator or Service Oklahoma (N Classen), or by mail. Titles are mailed and can't be picked up.
Do I need to file a release of liability in Oklahoma?
Form 773, Notice of Transfer of Ownership of a Vehicle, is optional. It costs $10. It flags the sale in Service Oklahoma's records and blocks certain transactions until the buyer transfers the title. File it online through OkCARS at service.ok.gov, or deliver or mail it to any tag agency. Filing it does not transfer the title. No official filing deadline is stated.
What do I do with the plates after selling a car in Oklahoma?
Plates stay with the seller. Oklahoma plates are assigned to the person, not the vehicle, so keep your plate when you sell. You can bring a plate with unexpired tags to transfer it to your next vehicle for credit.
What happens to the title when a car is junked or salvaged in Oklahoma?
Form 701-10, Application for Junked Vehicle Title, is for Class AA wrecker or towing services only. It covers vehicles they lawfully impounded at law enforcement's direction that have an NADA value under $300, under 42 O.S. 91A(A)(7). Insurers that can't get the title from the insured after a total-loss settlement may use Form 780-B (Unobtainable Ownership Documentation Affidavit) to get a salvage title under 47 O.S. 1105(P).
What can I do about an abandoned vehicle on my property in Oklahoma?
Vehicles removed as abandoned under 47 O.S. 954A, and other law-enforcement-directed tows by Class AA wreckers, go through the Title 42 Section 91A possessory lien process. That process uses notices, a sale and a return of sale, and the forms are in Service Oklahoma Packet 752. A low-value impounded vehicle may get a junked vehicle title (Form 701-10).
