Odometer disclosure statement

The seller's written statement of a vehicle's mileage at transfer, required by federal law for many vehicles.

An odometer disclosure statement is the seller’s written certification of the mileage at the time of transfer. It is often a section on the back of the title. Federal rules set the requirement, and states collect it during title transfer.

When you junk an older car you may still need to write the mileage on the title, depending on the model year and your state’s forms. Write the reading as shown, and mark it if you know it is not the actual mileage.

Federal rules exempt older vehicles. A vehicle from model year 2010 or earlier is exempt once it is transferred at least 10 years after January 1 of its model year. A vehicle from model year 2011 or later is exempt only once it is transferred at least 20 years after January 1 of its model year; for transfers in calendar year 2031, model year 2011 and older vehicles are exempt.1
