Full guide: How to remove an abandoned car from your property
An abandoned vehicle is one left on public property, a highway shoulder or someone else’s land longer than state law allows. Police or property owners can have it towed, and after notice periods it may be sold or sent to a demolisher.
If an old car is on your property, you usually can’t simply junk it without a legal process, because you don’t hold the title. If it’s your car that was left somewhere, act before storage fees build up.
In Texas, a vehicle left on private property without the owner’s consent for more than 48 hours is abandoned. A person who has an abandoned vehicle in their possession can apply to the state for authority to dispose of it to a demolisher. The state notifies owners and lienholders, who have 20 days to claim it.1
