Rollback tow
A tow truck with a bed that tilts and slides back so the whole vehicle is winched on and carried.
A rollback tow uses a flatbed truck whose bed tilts and slides back to the ground. The vehicle is winched onto the bed and carried with all four wheels off the road. It is the usual choice for cars with missing wheels, locked transmissions, all-wheel drive or heavy damage, which describes many junk cars.
When you arrange junk car pickup, mention anything that will make towing harder, such as flat tires, no keys, or a car stuck in a backyard, because it can change the equipment needed and the price.
Texas towing rules list “car carrier operation” as its own topic, separate from towing with a wheel lift, a tow sling or tow dollies, in the professional development course incident management tow operators must take before first renewing their license.1
